It would have been simple for Jan to stay there in Jackson City, to work at General Hospital in Monroe, to settle down to two dates a week with Tom and an eventual marriage, to fall into a dull, humdrum routine. It would have been safe, secure. But no, she had to chase her rainbows and satisfy her dreams and search for that elusive thing called happiness. So Jan Gordon came to Deer River, with its dude ranches deep in the Rockies, in order to thrust aside all the unpleasant memories of the past and rediscover herself. But Jan found that as a nurse and as a woman, she couldn’t turn her back on conflict. There were two young doctors in Deer River; Jan owed loyalty to both. To Dr. Coe, Jan was bound by her conscience, but it was Dr. Noel Lester who held her heart. Nurse Jan suddenly felt happy and lighthearted as she drove young Dr. Noel Lester home. Her doubts about coming to Deer River to work for the summer began to disappear. He is nicer than I thought he would be, she thought, as they pulled up in front of the house. Helping her out of the car, he took her hand. “Come in and have dinner with me,” he said. She had not hoped for this much, but she knew she wanted to stay with him. Perhaps it was all a reaction to the things that had been happening to her. Noel Lester was exciting. Handsome. The unknown. She had come here looking for something. Happiness. Love. Fulfillment. Who was to say that it wasn’t right here in Noel’s outstretched hand?

Look Back to Love by Vin Packer

Look Back to Love by Vin Packer

Springtime in France, cruel in its beauty, tore them apart. Six people on a vacation in the hopes of redeeming their seemingly lost lives: Todd Phelps–the American newspaper columnist, whose drive for ambition has left him frustrated and discontent; Fran Phelps–his wife, who feels that having been married to Todd did not fulfill her dreams of marriage and family; Edward Allen–the aspiring writer, who believed that his detachment from humanity was because he is not capable of feeling love; Janet Carew–the mysterious Englishwoman, forever seeking what she believes to be love and somehow finding it; Henry Carew–her grotesque husband, outwardly appearing to enjoy his wife’s infidelity; and–Philip Carew–the lonely misguided son, who had a reason for his bizarre attachment to his mother. It drew Todd into a vortex of destructive, wanton passion–for another woman. It gave Fran a glimpse of the forbidden and terrible paths of desire. Then France, mistress of the world, taught them the deeper of meaning of love. Their relationships intertwine, and they will have to embrace these demons in order to survive! A novel poignant and searing, by Vin Packer, author of Spring Fire and Dark Intruders. This book was originally published as a Gold Medal paperback original in 195 3.

Remaking a Vintage Romance Cover

There’s work and there’s fun. Doing covers for WPG (Wonder Publishing Group) is more the later. We’re publishing, as an eBook, a vintage romance novel by Vin Packer (AKA Marijane Meaker), called Look Back to Love. The book came out as a paperback original in 1953. Back when paperback originals were still a novelty. The cover wasn’t inspiring to me at first, but once I got it completed, I’m a bit more hip to it. Anywho, here’s the cover of the original; a photoshoped cleaned-up image; and the final cover (if I don’t tweak with it) for the WPG eBook, which will be out in two or three weeks.

It took me awhile to find the font I ended up using. I was thinking Romance should have something decorative (pretty, pretty). But I like this Balloon font. It reminds me of an old movie poster. Yes, me like retro!
